Vanishing On 7th Street

Hayden Christiansen is in danger of falling into a shadow world (‘ten years too late!’ cry Star Wars fans) in this mysterious low-budget thriller. His bemused news reporter is among the survivors when the rest of the city vanishes in an eerie flash of crumpled clothes and dropped phones. This Twilight Zone hook makes for an impressive set of opening scenes – a cinema screen of flickering lights, a maternity ward of vacant cots – but doesn’t drive the relationship between the small band of the living anywhere interesting. Kudos to the film for holding tight to any potential explanations, but shame it doesn’t offer engagement as an alternative to enlightenment.
