One Missed Call

A Hollywood remake of Takashi Miike’s 2004 hit Chakushin Ari, which was itself patched together from earlier, better vengeful ghost films like Ring and The Grudge, One Missed Call is the cold swill resting on the very bottom of the scraped barrel that is the J-horror phenomenon. In it, a tired-looking Ed Burns accompanies Shannyn Sossamon on a quest to find out why her friends keep dying after they receive voicemails from themselves, in the future. Some scares lurk in the darker sequences, but everything about the film’s ambition and quality can be summed up by the fact that at one point it references a scene from Final Destination. Really?
