Love In The Time Of Cholera

Detailed but ultimately drowsy period drama set in cholera-struck Columbia. Well to do Fermina Daza falls for the poetic but poor Florentino Ariza, only for her ambitious Pop to intervene. The lovers exchange a flurry of forevers as she’s sent to live with country relatives, but when she returns to the city she has a change of heart which breaks his, and sets up a lifelong love triangle with the dashing Doctor Juvenal Urbino. The three leads offer shrewd and steady performances, but beyond the odd titter at Ariza’s mid-period womanising there’s barely a twitch of excitement.
